Brunel Awards

The 2005 Brunel Awards competition is arranged by DSB and The Watford Group and is an architecture and design award where entries may only be made by public and private heavy railway companies and operators.

The event took place on 14 September 2005 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, in Copenhagen, Denmark.

20 railway companies from 13 countries had entered a total of 159 projects. This year, the Jury presented 9 Awards and 19 Commendations and a special Brunel Jury Prize for Excellence in Corporate Design to a railway company or organisation.

The aim of the Award is primarily to promote design and railway architecture. The Awards should promote aesthetic quality, customer orientation and sustainability across all sectors of the rail industry. Furthermore, the Award should underscore the rail mode as an indispensable transport mode with inherent economic and environmental advantages, and also draw attention to the role which the railways play in securing and enhancing the standard of living and quality of life that we all have come to take for granted.

The Brunel Award is named after the noted British railway engineer, inventor and architect Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859). He founded and built the famous Great Western Railway between London and Bristol.
